Conservation Status
Mourning doves are very common across the continent, and have generally prospered as people have settled the continent. However, their populations have slightly declined in recent years. These doves are a popular game bird and hunters have been estimated to shoot about 20 million every year. Game managers monitor their populations in an effort to protect the species as a whole.
Habitat
Mourning Doves prefer open areas and can be found foraging on the ground in grasslands, fields, roadsides, and backyards.
